Homer Glen, Illinois. It’s the middle of Petit Le Mans weekend at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, but Star Mazda Championship driver Eric Freiberg isn’t focusing on lap times or car setup this afternoon as he visits Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston as part of the Racing for Kids program to bring the motorsports world to sick children and raise awareness on the health care funding needs of Children's Hospitals around the world. For several hours Freiberg will pose for pictures, sign autographs and spend time with these children that can’t make it to the racetrack.
“This is my first season participating in the Racing for Kids program and right from the very first hospital visit during the opening race of the season at Sebring I’ve been hooked,” Freiberg explains. “It is easy to get caught up in what is happening at the track, to the exclusion of everything else, but when I visit these kids and see their excitement, to see their spirits raised, is as rewarding as any podium finish and helps to put things in perspective.”
Freiberg, who resides in Homer Glen, Illinois, has participated in events in Florida, Utah, and Atlanta as he races the #3 Northwest Autosport Pro Formula Mazda in the Star Mazda Championship, continuing the tradition started by former Northwest Autosport driver and current Indy Pro Series driver Ryan Justice. “When I joined the team this season Ryan shared a bit about the program and I was fired up to help right away,” Freiberg revealed. “This weekend we kicked it up a notch, featuring the Racing for Kids logos on the sidepods of my car to continue to raise awareness of the program.”
About Racing for Kids
Founded in Detroit in 1989, Racing For Kids® is designed to use the increasing popularity of motorsports to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of children.
The hospital visits form the heart of the program. Racing For Kids® drivers visit children in Children's Hospitals wherever they race. They spend time with each sick youngster answering questions about their sport, posing for pictures, signing autographs and handing out the distinctive Racing For Kids® hats, coloring books and assorted memorabilia provide by our sponsors.
Racing For Kids® representatives have visited with more than 15,000 young patients in nearly 350 hospitals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Australia.
In addition, nearly $4 million has been raised through donations and specific fund raising events for children's hospitals and child health institutions and causes across the country.
